Volume of foreign trade turnover of Tajikistan in the first quarter of 2014 fell by 3.7%, exceeding $1.1 billion in January-March, reported the Statistics Agency on Tuesday.

Weather-related events and increased demand came into play as the FAO Food Price Index registered its sharpest increase since mid-2012, averaging 208.1 points in February 2014, according to press release issued by FAO on March 6. The new level is 5.2 points, or 2.6 percent, above a slightly revised index for January, but is still 2.1 percent lower than last year at the same time.

Barqi Tojik (Tajik state-controlled electricity supplier) reports that total electricity generation in January 2014 was more than 1.4 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) or 46.5 million kWh per day.

altThe Cotton Sector Recovery Project is reportedly in the final stage of completion. The World Bank’s Tajikistan Partnership Program Snapshot notes the Project aims to assist the Government of Tajikistan in resolving the cotton debt crisis and rejuvenating the cotton sector through debt resolution, an improved policy environment, and increased cotton output and profitability.

According to the report, the accumulation of cotton debt is a result of producer exploitation by the cotton processing and marketing monopolies, which also control credit and input supply.

The report on fruit and vegetable processing sector study in Tajikistan was prepared in the framework of the "Local Market Development" project, funded by the Swiss organization Helvetas and the Dutch organization ICCO. The study was conducted by Association of Fruit and Vegetable Processing Enterprises.
